France has not adapted one of its most celebrated novels, Stendhal’s The Red and the Black, for either the small or the big screen since 1998. Today, the web of passions and ambitions that shapes the dazzling life of Julien Sorel returns at the heart of a major production. Rather than seeking to modernize the text through flamboyant stylistic devices, director Gaël Morel offers a nuanced reinterpretation of its human relationships, focusing on how the characters interact, confront one another, and engage in dialogue.

The journey of the ambitious and conflicted Julien Sorel, torn between two women as opposite as they are complementary – Louise de Rênal and Mathilde de La Mole – and who will die for it. Based on the work by Stendh.
