The new Harry Potter TV series has not yet premiered, but HBO is already looking ahead. The network has officially renewed the project for a second season, confirming its intention to build a long-form adaptation of the wizarding world created by J. K. Rowling.
Production on the second chapter is expected to begin this fall, while the first season – based on Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone – is scheduled to debut at Christmas 2026. The strategy points to a tightly planned release structure designed to reduce gaps between seasons and maintain a steady narrative flow.
HBO pushes for faster production planning
The early renewal comes while filming for the first season is still underway. HBO had already indicated in recent months that it intended to accelerate development, with scripts for the next season being prepared in advance.
Behind this approach are also practical considerations. The main cast is made up largely of young actors, and the production aims to avoid long breaks that could affect continuity. The goal is to preserve narrative consistency and visual cohesion as the characters grow over time.
On the creative side, Jon Brown – known for his work on Succession and already involved in Season 1 – has been promoted to co-showrunner alongside Francesca Gardiner, strengthening the leadership team behind the series.
The cast of the new Harry Potter series
The first season will adapt Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, introducing the beginning of Harry’s journey at Hogwarts.
Dominic McLaughlin will play Harry Potter, joined by Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley and Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger. The cast also includes Nick Frost as Hagrid, John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, and Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall.
The series will air on HBO and stream on HBO Max in December 2026.
