The Nanny Diaries is being adapted into a TV series for Netflix. The project marks a new version of the early 2000s novel, which was previously brought to the screen with the film The Nanny Diaries, directed by Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini.
Supporting the development of the series is Scarlett Johansson, who joins the project as an executive producer. Johansson also starred in the film adaptation, helping bring the story to a wider audience.
A new adaptation for Netflix
This new television project is based on the novel by Emma McLaughlin and Nicola Kraus. The series aims to rework the original material into a serialized format, expanding on characters and storylines.
Writing and development are led by Amy Chozick and Jenny Bicks, both serving as writers, producers, and showrunners. The creative team will shape a narrative suited to television while maintaining a strong focus on the social context at the heart of the story.
Plot and setting
The story follows Annie, a struggling young writer who takes a job as a nanny in New York’s Upper East Side. This new environment introduces her to a world defined by privilege, unspoken rules, and complex family dynamics.
As the narrative unfolds, Annie navigates a double life: pursuing her ambitions while becoming increasingly involved in the lives of the family she works for. This tension becomes the driving force of the story.
Production and development
The project also involves producers such as Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Leigh Redman through Berlanti Productions, in collaboration with Spyglass Media Group and Warner Bros. Television.
In addition to the original novel, the series may draw from the sequel published by the authors, expanding its narrative potential. The adaptation joins Netflix’s growing slate of series based on literary works, aiming to deliver a broader and more contemporary take on the story.
