Brad Pitt is set to reprise his role as Gerry Lane in the sequel to World War Z. Paramount has officially confirmed the project after several announcements that, until now, had not yet been made official.
The project will also involve Brad Pitt’s production company, Plan B Entertainment, which had previously acquired the rights to Max Brooks’ books (“The Zombie Survival Guide” and “World War Z“) for the production of the first film. The producers involved are Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner.
Following the success of the first film, Brad Pitt had long pursued the idea of making a sequel, particularly in light of its strong box-office performance, which totaled $540 million worldwide.
Initially, the actor had sought to involve director David Fincher, his longtime collaborator. However, the various attempts proved unsuccessful due to issues surrounding the substantial budget required for the production.
Edward Berger, known for films such as Conclave and All quiet on the western front, will direct the film and will also serve as an executive producer.
The film marks another collaboration between Edward Berger and Brad Pitt, who recently worked together on another project, The Riders.
The screenplay is being written by Dennis Kelly. As for the plot, no details have yet been revealed, although several theories have emerged about the possible directions the story could take.
It is worth remembering that the first film, directed by Marc Forster, departed considerably from Max Brooks’ books.
