On the night of September 14–15, the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards® took place at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles, hosted this year by Mariska Hargitay, best known for her role as Detective Olivia Benson in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.
Among all the nominated series, the standout of this year’s Emmys was Widow’s Bay, the horror comedy from Apple TV+, which triumphed with 14 awards out of 19 nominations, a new record for a comedy series. Set in a fictional New England town plagued by a centuries-old curse, the series took home six out of seven awards over the course of the evening — Best Comedy, Lead Actor, Supporting Actor and Actress, Directing, and Writing. The only award to elude it was Best Lead Actress, which went to Jean Smart for Hacks. For her, it marked a fifth consecutive Emmy as Best Comedy Actress, one for every season of the show, bringing her career total to eight Emmys as an actress.
It was also a record-breaking night for Widow’s Bay’s leading man, Matthew Rhys, who took home two awards, one for Best Comedy Actor and the other for Lead Actor in a Limited Series for the Netflix production The Beast in Me. A night of celebration for the Welsh actor, who became the first performer in the Emmys’ 78-year history to win two lead acting awards for two different series.
