Netflix has finally announced the release date for its miniseries “Pride and Prejudice,” based on Jane Austen’s celebrated masterpiece, which, nearly 210 years after her death, continues to be a major reference point in modern culture.
It is an ambitious undertaking, particularly given the legacy of the acclaimed adaptations of the past, from the 1995 miniseries starring Colin Firth to the 2005 film featuring Keira Knightley.
The new six-episode miniseries is written by Dolly Alderton (Everything I Know About Love) and directed by Euros Lyn. The project aims to build on this important legacy while offering a new interpretation of the story of Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy.
The Story and Cast
At the heart of the new miniseries is one of the most celebrated love stories in literature, set against the backdrop of 19th-century England and the strict social conventions of the time.
The story follows Elizabeth Bennet, one of the five Bennet sisters, and her encounter with the wealthy and reserved Mr. Darcy.
Faced with their significant social differences, the two protagonists are forced to question their own prejudices and the expectations imposed on them by society, while the Bennet family faces the pressures surrounding marriage and the future of its daughters.
Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy are played by Emma Corrin and Jack Lowden, respectively.
Olivia Colman will portray Mrs. Bennet, the mother of the Bennet sisters, who is determined to find suitable husbands for her daughters, while Rufus Sewell will play Mr. Bennet.
The cast also includes Freya Mavor (Jane Bennet), Daryl McCormack (Mr. Bingley), Louis Partridge (Mr. Wickham), Rhea Norwood (Lydia Bennet), Jamie Demetriou (Mr. Collins), and Fiona Shaw (Lady Catherine de Bourgh).
