Prime Video is bringing Crouch End, one of Stephen King’s most unsettling stories, to the small screen. Set in London, the story will become a six-episode British limited series.
Prime Video announced the adaptation of Crouch End on August 27, 2026. The horror story was first published in 1980 in the anthology New Tales of the Cthulhu Mythos and was later republished, in a slightly different version, in the 1993 collection Nightmares & Dreamscapes.
Set in the real-life district of Crouch End in North London, the story contains clear references to H.P. Lovecraft’s imagery and cosmic horror. The story had already received a television adaptation in 2006, as part of the anthology series Nightmares & Dreamscapes: From the Stories of Stephen King, which aired on TNT.
Crouch End, the story
The story follows Doris Freeman, a famous actress who arrives at a London police station after her husband mysteriously disappears. She claims that what happened is connected to events that cannot be explained rationally.
Inspector Ted Vetter is assigned to the case and must determine whether Doris is telling the truth, whether she is involved in the disappearance, or whether something far more disturbing lies behind the case.
The story gradually transforms the London neighborhood into a dark and threatening place, where the characters’ certainties begin to crumble and reality seems to no longer follow the usual rules.
The themes of Stephen King’s horror
Crouch End combines crime thriller, psychological horror, and cosmic horror, exploring themes such as the loss of reality, disorientation, doubt about one’s own perception, and fear of the unknown.
The story is strongly influenced by the horror genre. At its heart is the idea of a world far larger and more incomprehensible than the one perceived by human beings, inhabited by forces that defy rational understanding.
Crouch End thus becomes a place where the boundary between known reality and something dark and supernatural seems to grow thinner, transforming an ordinary London neighborhood into the setting of a nightmare.
The Prime Video series
The screenplay is being written by Paul Tomalin, while Tom Shankland will direct. The series is produced by Mammoth Screen and Fifth Season, together with Amazon MGM Studios.
Casting is already underway, but no official cast members have been announced yet. A release date has also not been revealed.
The new production will therefore offer a fresh take on King’s story, expanding its narrative through the limited-series format.
