More than four decades after the end of the beloved television series, Little House on the Prairie is set to return to the small screen thanks to Netflix.
The announcement has already sparked excitement among fans of different generations, who grew up following the adventures of the Ingalls family and the values that made the series a worldwide phenomenon.
The author behind the books
Among the key figures behind the success of Little House on the Prairie is its author, Laura Ingalls Wilder, who was born in Wisconsin in 1867 and wrote about her childhood growing up on the American frontier during the nineteenth century.
In her books, Laura Ingalls Wilder recounts her early years through the eyes of a young girl growing up in the frontier regions of the United States.
Her stories portray the daily lives of pioneers, including long wagon journeys, the construction of wooden homes, farm work, and the challenges posed by harsh weather conditions and survival.
Over time, her works became a landmark of children’s literature and inspired both the iconic television series of the 1970s and Netflix’s new adaptation, bringing renewed attention to a timeless story.
History of the series
Little House on the Prairie is one of television’s most successful shows. The pilot episode aired on NBC on March 30, 1974.
The series officially premiered on September 11, 1974, and ran for nine seasons before concluding in 1983. It consists of 204 episodes and received a total of 17 Emmy Awards, 2 People’s Choice Awards, and 3 Golden Globe Awards.
The original series was produced by NBC in association with Ed Friendly and starred Michael Landon as Charles Ingalls, Karen Grassle as Caroline Ingalls, Melissa Gilbert as Laura Ingalls, Melissa Sue Anderson as Mary Ingalls, and Lindsay and Sidney Greenbush as Carrie Ingalls.

Netflix Reboot
The reboot was co-produced by CBS Studios and Anonymous Content and is scheduled to be released on Netflix on July 9, 2026.
This return aims to offer a new interpretation of the original story, designed for a contemporary audience.
The project seeks to preserve the central themes of the original work – family, survival, the connection with nature, and the hardships of pioneer life – while expanding its focus on character development, community dynamics, and the social challenges of the American frontier.
Little House on the Prairie intends to revisit the world created by Laura Ingalls Wilder with the goal of engaging both longtime fans of the original show and new generations through a more contemporary narrative that remains faithful to its historical setting and the experiences of the Ingalls family.
The story follows the Ingalls family on the American frontier during the nineteenth century, primarily through the perspective of young Laura Ingalls, who grows up in a harsh and constantly changing environment.
After the family settles in Walnut Grove, Laura’s personal growth becomes the central thread of the narrative. From childhood to adolescence, she experiences personal challenges, the loss of innocence, and the discovery of the adult world.
The reboot features an entirely new cast, including Alice Halsey as Laura Ingalls, Luke Bracey (Charles “Pa” Ingalls), Crosby Fitzgerald (Caroline “Ma” Ingalls), Skywalker Hughes (Mary Ingalls), Warren Christie (John Edwards), Meegwun Fairbrother (Mitchell), Alyssa Wapanatâhk (White Sun), and Jocko Sims (Dr. George Tann).
